With the holiday season fast approaching Cineplex Entertainment has teamed with Hamilton Ontario glassblower Kelly Lowe to create a short film demonstrating and describing how traditional blown glass Christmas tree ornaments are made. The film features Kelly as she creates one of these iconic ornaments, from the moment she pulls the liquid glass from a furnace kept at 1150 degrees Celsius (1/5 the surface temperature of the Sun), to the moment the ornament is placed within the annealer, a special glassblowing kiln, to cool over the course of 24 hours to ensure the piece is durable, rugged, and strong. The process is done entirely by hand, using no molds or other such aids: just molten glass, a blowpipe, some colour and an artist working in her element. Filming took place on October 21st, with the results taken back to Cineplex Entertainment's studios to be edited and prepared for theatres. The film will be shown for the entire month of December before all feature films rated “G” and “PG”, in all of Cineplex's nationwide movie theatres. The estimated viewing audience of the film is 6.4 million people. “I actually found the experience to be really fun,” Kelly says: “at first I was really nervous, because I've never done anything like this before. But the producer (Samantha Pestano) and the cameraman were really great, which made things a lot easier. Now I'm just really excited to see it, though I have to wonder: if television adds fifteen pounds, how much does a fifty foot screen add?” “I'm also really flattered with all of this, and quite honestly impressed with Cineplex Entertainment. For them to go ahead and promote the arts and handmade work in such a big way, and in December too, is really amazing. I have a lot of respect for that decision, and the people that chose to go through with it.” Kelly Lowe has been a full time glassblower for more than thirteen years. Her glassblowing studio is located at 265 Barton Street, Unit 39, in Stoney Creek Ontario. The studio is divided into two parts: a rear workshop area, and a front gallery where her work is displayed and sold to the public. She is most known for her work with area businesses designing and creating awards, presentation pieces and gifts – however the quality of her work has also brought her national recognition, with her pieces being presented to members of parliament, our nation's top entertainers, leading scientists and other such high profile individuals. In addition to her work with businesses she also maintains a unique collection of individual art pieces ranging from vases and glass sculptures to strange blown glass creatures she's calls “Kritters” - each consisting of the traits of two real animals combined into humorous characters such as a “porkutort” (half porcupine/half tortoise) or an “octocerus” (half octopus/half rhinoceros).### If you'd like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview, please call Kelly at (289)339-2450, or email her at kelly@kellyloweglass.com An online copy of this press release is available at: http://www.kellyloweglass.com/press/cineplex
